If you need to divide up a large room for different functions, room dividers and privacy screens can help you do so. What's more, why not create your own divider.

Although you may love a large-sized room, sometimes it's more practical to divide up a room for different functions. Perhaps you need an area that requires more privacy or maybe you just want to use part of your living room for office work. On the other hand, maybe you want to set aside an area for quiet reading, away from the more formal part of your living room. For whatever reason, sometimes dividing a room is a better choice than keeping it as one large area. Here are some tips for dividing your room, both functionally and attractively...

Room Dividers

You can buy room dividers at most furniture stores. Besides being purposeful, you can choose from dividers that add beauty to your room. Price varies, of course, depending how elaborate you want the divider. However, the average price runs anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to as high as around $800.

  • Glass room dividers - Beautiful, practical and functional, glass and metal room dividers can add a new look to your home. However, it's probably advisable that you don't choose this heavier kind of room divider if you have small children, for safety reasons.

  • Fabric room dividers - Besides being lightweight and cheaper than wood or glass room dividers, fabric dividers come in a wide range of colors, as well as textures and patterns. They're also a good choice because of being easy to move, in addiction to being striking.

  • Wood room dividers - Wood dividers offer diversity in size, as well as shape and color. What's more, wood adds a certain charm to your room, giving it more of a warm look.

Privacy Screens

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on a divider, then consider privacy screens which are much cheaper. You can usually get them for around $100-$170 in home improvement stores or by shopping online And, of course, if you want to dress them up a bit, you can easily do that, as well as express your own creativity. For example, you could display your children’s artwork, giving it a personal touch, besides being functional.

Bookshelves/Old Doors

Bookshelves (either large or small ones grouped together) are another excellent way to divide a room. On the top bookshelf, you can use your creativity, arranging knickknacks, small potted plants, and family photos to enhance your room's personality.

If you really want to get creative, redo an old door to complement the room, using it as a room divider.

Couches as Room Dividers

And, of course, you can divided a room up with a couch, if you're not concerned with creating privacy, but just want to section it off into separate spaces. Just the placement of a couch in the middle of room is enough to define the area for entertaining. Behind the couch can be anything from a home office or dining room table to a play area for small children.

Finally, the beauty of room dividers is that they are not permanent fixtures. A room that needs to be sectioned up today can easily be converted back into a large room when you no longer need the privacy.
